Yanjala Farm – Healthy, Feel Good, Free Range Pork

Yanjala slow grown free range pork

Yanjala is a small-scale free range pig farm near Murgon, an hour inland from Gympie, Queensland (Australia), producing succulent free range pork.

We keep a very small herd of only 12 sows and 2 boars, which are all Wessex Saddlebacks. All of our pigs are born, raised and lovingly cared for right here on our farm.

We believe in ethical farming methods, producing high quality true free range pork that is good for our bodies, good for the animals and good for our land.

We do not claim to be organic, however our pigs never receive additives, chemicals, hormones or antibiotics. Just real… natural… slow grown pork.

What's so special about free range pork?

True free range pastured pork (from pigs that live and graze on open pasture 24/7) is higher in essential fatty acids and vitamins. Free range pork is high in Omega 3, Vitamins A, D and E, as well as selenium.

It’s also lower in saturated fat, which makes it a healthier choice for people who are trying to watch their fat intake.

Free range pork has a rich intense flavour. It’s also much more juicy and tender!

Our beautiful pigs are completely free range; living outdoors, in the fresh air, on open pastures. They have the freedom to do what they love to do… run, dig, forage, wallow and most of all, socialise!

The Wessex Saddleback pig

We have chosen to grow Wessex Saddleback pigs for our pork. Wessex Saddlebacks are a slow growing heritage breed pig, ideally suited for living in the outdoors and make wonderful paddock foragers.

Wessex Saddleback pork is much darker in colour than your usual supermarket pork. The texture is completely different, it’s extremely moist and melts in the mouth. It’s sweet and full of flavour, with a wonderful marbling of fat that produces incredibly juicy succulent pork.

Want to experience our incredible pork?

We sell our free range pork direct to the public as either quarter shares or as a whole pig. We currently sell our pork to customers in Brisbane, Gympie (includes our Sunshine Coast orders), Bundaberg and Rockhampton.

We strongly believe in supporting local business. We send our pigs to a selection of butchers throughout Qld to be cut up and bagged ready for collection by our customers. This way, we support your local butcher and they have the opportunity to introduce you to their business.

If you’re passing through the South Burnett, you will also find our products in the Farm 2 Fork Collective shop in Wooroolin. Open Fridays and Saturdays only.

Want to try a pig on a spit for your next event? We sell WHOLE SUCKLING AND SPIT PIGS when available. Make sure to reserve your spit pig early – we need a minimum of two weeks notice prior to your event date.

Cut out the middlemen, buy direct from the farmer. Better for you, better for us.

Did you know only 5% of Australian Sows are classed as free range?

However, the offspring of those sows are not always allowed to stay outdoors – many piglets are removed at 3 weeks to be raised in conventional concrete housing. And of those that do get to stay outside, the actual free range status requirements for grower pigs are questionable.

RSPCA approved free range facilities only need to provide space of up to 1.16m2 for each pig – this is the exact same area required for RSPCA approved indoor pigs.

We currently run around 70 to 90 pigs across 8 acres (32,000m2) of open pasture. That means our pigs average around 400m2 each – that’s 398.4m2 more than the RSPCA requirements!

What our customers have to say...

“I just love buying from passionate farmers and free range meat, especially pork. We have just bought (another) quarter and while the next delivery may be sooner than we prefer there will be friends to share with. 😀
We want to visit your farm one day.”

Genevieve, Brisbane

“We picked up the pork today and the process was painless, the butchers were very friendly. We have already eaten some mince and a chop each and really like the flavour and juiciness. We love your product and would definitely buy more when your next lot are ready.”

Warren & Sandy, Maryborough

“Scott n Selina…WOW Just had your pork chops on the BBQ, so much flavour, yum. Love the nice amount of fat on the meat. You’ve definitely won us, will tell our friends. Keep those little ones growing.”

John & Dorothy, Bundaberg
